THE CLOCK KEEPS TICKING...

"But one thing I do:
forgetting what lies behind
and straining forward
to what lies ahead...
I press on toward the goal
for the prize of the upward call of God
in Christ Jesus."

Philippians 3:13-14

May your New Year be filled
with the fragrance and
Presence of Christ.

ON A CHILLY SUNDAY AFTERNOON

murmuringcottage via tumblr

If His eye is on the wee sweet birdies,
I am reminded it surely is on you.
And yours.
And me, and mine.
And He is aware of all of our needs,
fulfilling them through His great
riches in Christ.

Let's take our cue from the tiny
creatures who so naturally
praise Him, the Source of
all our needs!

FOR LOVERS OF CHILDREN

wikipedia

THE CHILDREN'S HOUR
Henry Wadsworth Longfellow
(Born February 27, 1807; died March 24, 1882)

Between the dark and the daylight,
When the light is beginning to lower,
Comes a pause in the days' occupation
That is known as the Children's Hour.

I hear in the chamber above me
The patter of little feet,
The sound of a door that is opened,
And voices soft and sweet.

From my study I see in the lamplight,
Descending the broad hall stair,
Grave Alice and laughing Allegra,
And Edith with golden hair.

A whisper, and then a silence;
Yet I know by their merry eyes,
They are plotting and planning together
To take me by surprise.

A sudden rush from the stairway,
A sudden raid from the hall!
By three doors left unguarded
They enter my castle wall!

They climb up into my turret,
O'er the arms and back of my chair;
If I try to escape, they surround me;
They seem to be everywhere.

They almost devour me with kisses,
Their arms about me entwine,
Till I think of the Bishop of Bingen*
In his Mouse-Tower on the Rhine.

Do you think, O blue-eyed banditti,
Because you have scaled the wall,
Such an old mustache as I am
Is not a match for you all?

I have you fast in my fortress,
And will not let you depart,
But put you down into the dungeon
In the round-tower of my heart.

And there will I keep you forever,
Yes, forever and a day,
Till the wall shall crumble to ruin,
And moulder in dust away.

*The Mouse Tower is a stone tower on a small island in the Rhine, outside Bingen am Rhein, Germany.

And, once again, you can hear this poem being read by Urgelt just by copying and pasting this link:  http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ptKu9cc0ji4.

My friends, I strongly urge you to not only read and listen to this sublime poem yourself, but to read such poems to your children, your grandchildren, introducing them to the rich world of the imagination through moving images and lilting rhythms.

GLORY TO THE NEW BORN KING!

Hail the heaven-born Prince of Peace!
Hail the Sun of Righteousness!
Light and life to all He brings,
Risen with healing in His wings,
Mild He lays His glory by,
Born that we no more may die,
Born to raise us from the earth,
Born to give us second birth,
Hark! the herald angels sing,
"Glory to the new born King!"

~Charles Wesley

A blessed Christmas filled with Christ's
great grace and peace to all our
family and friends,

LEATHER UPPERS NOT A DOWNER

Definition:  "The upper is the part of the shoe attached to the sole.  Therefore a leather upper is one made of leather.  It is normally made of several pieces, some or all of which may be leather."

I must remember that there is more than one view here:  God sees our dear feet, no matter how they are shod, and says that they are beautiful if they carry "the gospel of peace" to others.

How the world needs the peace Christ gives; for it is the peace which no man can take away, this peace which proclaims man need no longer be at war against God.

He came walking on feet like ours, He the Prince of Peace; sinless feet pierced, opening the way for us to follow in His footsteps.

Christmas is so much more than the world would have us believe, or could fathom, without faith in the One it is all about.

These thoughts came as I contemplated leather uppers on the Sunday afternoon before Christmas.  Perhaps you will connect with other "figures of the true" being walked out in the world around you this week.  They whisper of Him, our Christ who came and walked among us with beautiful feet.

Let us approach and celebrate His Nativity in Holy Peace.

FOR CHRISTMAS MORNING

EASY CHEESE DANISH

photo and recipe: kitchengirljo

My dears, there is still time to run to the store for the items needed for this scrumptious-dilliumptous recipe!  It could even become a tradition in your family--think of it, the smells of  this wonderful Danish baking and wafting through the house as everyone rises to greet the great day of celebration.

2 cans ready-to-use refrigerated CRESCENT ROLLS
2 8-ounce packages CREAM CHEESE
1 cup SUGAR
1 tsp VANILLA EXTRACT
1 EGG
1 EGG WHITE

Glaze:
1/2 cup POWDERED SUGAR
2 Tbsp MILK
1/2 tsp VANILLA EXTRACT

Preheat oven to 350 degrees and grease a 13x9-inch baking pan.  Lay a pack of crescent rolls in the pan and pinch the openings together.  Beat the cream cheese, sugar, vanilla, and egg together until smooth.  Spread the mixture over the crescent rolls evenly and then lay the second pack of crescent rolls on top of the cheese mixture and brush with egg white.  Bake 35-45 minutes until the top is golden brown.  Top with glaze after cooling for 20 minutes.

Easy-peasy!

Thought:  This might also be a good recipe for a little person in your home to help with or, depending on their size, to do solo.  Very nice with fresh fruit and a nice steaming cup of hot chocolate as found in previous post.

TREASURED RECIPE

BRAN MUFFINS

For years we have enjoyed these moist, healthful bran muffins, and I feel it's time now to bequeath
the recipe to you.  However, as a friend warned who loves them, "Enjoy in small quantities!".

3 cups WHOLE BRAN
1 cup boiling WATER
1/2 cup CANOLA or COCONUT OIL
1/2 cup BLACKSTRAP MOLASSES
2 cups BUTTERMILK
2 EGGS
2 1/2 tsp BAKING SODA
1/2 tsp SALT
2 1/2 cups UNBLEACHED FLOUR
3/4 cup HONEY
1/2 cup RAISINS
Optional:  1/2 - 2/3 cup CHOCOLATE CHIPS
(Personally, I feel the chocolate chips send these
already delicious muffins "over the moon").  If not adding, use 1 cup raisins.

Pour boiling water over bran and let cool.
Add all ingredients except dry ones, beating well.
Blend dry ingredients and add.  I add the raisins (you can also use dried cranberries, or any dried fruit) and chocolate chips last.

This mixture can be stored in a tightly-covered plastic container in your 'frig up to 5 weeks--use out of it as you desire OR make all at once!  They freeze well.  If frozen, I microwave them about 40 seconds (depending on your microwave's power), and this makes the chocolate chips all melty.  If not frozen, I still microwave them for, say, 30 seconds.

TO BAKE:  using a 1/3 cup measure makes around 20 REGULAR muffins.  Bake 20 minutes at 425 degrees.

Using GIANT muffin tins the recipe will make 12 muffins.  Bake 25 minutes at 425 degrees, or until done with a cake tester.

Let baked muffins rest in tin 5 minutes, and then remove, unless you're using paper inserts and then they can be removed immediately.   Cool on rack.

This is a keeper!
Like you.

INNOCENTS UNAWARE

Have you ever watched, really watched, your children or grandchildren, while they were sleeping?  It reminds one that God watches over all of us, and tenderly loves us in this most vulnerable state.

And in death, He watches, and covers us
with His great soft wings.

"The LORD your God in your midst,
The Mighty One, will save:
He will rejoice over you with gladness,
He will quiet you with His love,
He will rejoice over you with singing."
Zephaniah 3:17
